GDP: New Zealand economy shrinks by 0.3 percent
In a sign of economic slowdown, the 'Gross Domestic Product (GDP)' that showed an upward trend until June experienced a 0.3% decline in the third quarter, according to recent statistics.
The manufacturing sector bore the brunt of the GDP contraction in the September quarter, as indicated by data recently released by the statistics bureau. The petroleum, chemical, plastic, rubber product manufacturing, and food and beverage sectors all showed signs of decline.
As a result, the transportation, postal, and warehouse sectors also experienced a decrease due to reduced exports, impacting the logistics industry. Statisticians explained, "The transportation and logistics sectors were affected due to the decrease in export volume."
Nevertheless, despite an overall decrease in GDP, the service sector demonstrated growth in eight out of eleven sub-sectors during the third quarter of September. Particularly, the health, social support, leasing, employment, and real estate service sectors showed significant growth.
Moreover, GDP expenditure in the September quarter decreased by 0.7%, and household spending also saw a 0.6% decline. The reduction in spending within the automotive sector had a significant impact. Analysts attribute the decline in the automotive sector to the changes in automotive fees and rebates introduced on July 1.
Furthermore, the overall investment expenditure decreased due to a reduction in transportation equipment investment. While the decline in exports of agricultural, forestry, and fuel products contributed to the GDP contraction, the increase in service exports, such as travel services, partially offset the overall impact.

지난 6월까지 상승세를 보였던 '국내총생산(GDP)'이 9월 분기에 전 분기보다 0.3% 감소하며 경기 둔화의 조짐을 드러냈다.
최근 발표된 통계국 자료에 따르면, 제조업 부문이 9월 분기 GDP 감소에 주춤했다. 석유, 화학, 플라스틱, 고무 제품 제조업과 식품 및 음료 부문에서 감소세를 나타냈다.
이로 인해 운송, 우편, 창고 부문도 수출 감소로 영향을 받아 물류 부문이 감소했다. 통계 담당자는 "수출 물량의 감소로 운송 및 물류 부문이 영향을 받았다"고 설명했다.
그럼에도 불구하고 서비스업 부문은 9월 분기에 전체 11개 부문 중 8개가 성장세를 기록했다. 특히, 보건, 사회 지원, 임대, 고용, 부동산 서비스 부문이 큰 증가세를 보였다.
또한 9월 분기의 GDP 지출은 0.7% 감소했고, 가계 지출도 0.6% 줄었다. 자동차 부문에서의 지출 감소가 큰 영향을 미쳤다. 7월 1일부터 도입된 자동차 수수료 및 리베이트 변경이 자동차 부문의 감소에 영향을 끼친 것으로 분석됐다.
뿐만 아니라 운송장비 투자의 감소로 전체적인 투자 지출도 감소했다. 농림수산물과 연료의 수출이 줄면서 GDP 감소에도 영향을 주었지만, 여행 서비스 등의 서비스 수출이 상승하면서 일부 상쇄효과를 나타냈다.
