Christopher Luxon Faces Controversy Amid Criticism of Māori Language Policies
New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is embroiled in controversy after criticizing the Māori language support policies of the previous government while revealing that he personally received government funding for private Māori language lessons.
According to reports from Stuff and others, the Prime Minister's office released a statement acknowledging Luxon's receipt of government funding for Māori language education during his tenure as the leader of the opposition.
A spokesperson for the Prime Minister's office explained, "At that time, as the leader of the opposition and a potential prime minister, enhancing proficiency in Māori was closely related to his role."
Upon this revelation, both the New Zealand media and the opposition have criticized Luxon, claiming that he engaged in actions contradicting his own policy values.
The former New Zealand Labour Party, during their term, implemented various Māori language promotion policies, including the use of Māori language on traffic signs. However, Luxon, as the leader of the opposition at the time, opposed the use of Māori on signs, advocating for English-only signage.
Luxon has further emphasized his stance by stating that individuals seeking to learn Māori should "bear the cost themselves." He advocates for the discontinuation of Māori language education support policies and the elimination of language allowances for public servants proficient in Māori.
Recently, during parliamentary sessions, Luxon refused to respond when Māori Party representative Rawiri Waititi posed questions in the Māori language.
Former Prime Minister and current Labour Party leader Chris Hipkins criticized Luxon, stating, "While Luxon deserves praise for learning Māori, refusing to extend the same opportunity to others after benefiting from financial support is hypocritical," likening it to someone receiving a subsidy to buy a new Tesla electric car and then eliminating the subsidy.
He continued, emphasizing, "Māori is a national treasure, and every New Zealander should have the opportunity to learn it."
The Taxpayers' Union, a civic organization, acknowledged Luxon's valid criticism of fiscal waste but urged him to practice what he preaches, stating, "If he has received support and has been called out on it, then he should willingly repay the (tuition) fees."
Since taking office last month, Luxon has stirred controversy by announcing the reversal of various policies from the previous government, particularly those related to Māori language use in public spaces and the reevaluation of the legal interpretation of the Waitangi Treaty between the British Crown and the Māori people. This has sparked resistance from the Māori community and others opposed to Luxon's anti-Māori policies.

스터프 등에 따르면 뉴질랜드 총리실은 이날 성명을 통해 럭슨 총리가 야당 대표 시절 정부 지원금으로 마오리어 개인 교습을 받은 적이 있다고 밝혔다.
총리실 대변인은 "당시 야당 지도자이자 잠재적 총리로서 마오리어 능력을 발전시키는 것은 그의 역할과 매우 관련이 있었다"고 설명했다.
이런 사실이 드러나자 뉴질랜드 언론과 야당은 럭슨 총리가 자신의 정책적 가치와 상반되는 일을 했다며 비판했다.
전 정부인 뉴질랜드 노동당은 교통 표지판에 원주민 언어인 마오리어를 표기하는 등 각종 마오리어 진흥 정책을 펼쳤다. 하지만 당시 야당 대표이던 럭슨 총리는 표지판에 영어만 써야 한다며 공용화에 반대했다.
또 럭슨 총리는 취임 후 마오리어를 배우려는 사람은 "스스로 비용을 지불해야 한다"며 마오리어 교육 지원 정책이나, 마오리어를 어느 수준 이상으로 하는 공무원에게 지급되는 언어 수당을 폐지해야 한다고 강조했다.
최근에는 국회에서 마오리당의 대표 라위리 와이티 의원이 마오리어로 대정부 질문을 하자 답변을 거부하기도 했다.
야당 노동당 대표인 크리스 힙킨스 전 총리는 "럭슨 총리가 마오리어를 배운 것은 칭찬받아야 하지만, 자신이 받았던 지원금을 없애 다른 사람에게 같은 기회를 주지 않으려는 것은 위선"이라며 "마치 자신은 보조금을 받아 새 테슬라 전기차를 산 뒤 보조금을 없애는 것과 같다"고 비판했다.
이어 "마오리어는 국보이며 모든 뉴질랜드인이 배울 기회를 가져야 한다"고 강조했다.
시민단체 납세자 연맹(TPU)은 럭슨 총리가 재정 낭비를 지적한 것은 옳은 일이라면서도 "자신이 말하는 것을 기꺼이 실천해야 하며 지적받았으니 (수업료는) 갚아야 한다"고 말했다.
지난달 취임한 럭슨 총리는 해양 유전 탐사 금지나 초강력 금연법 등 전 정부의 정책들을 뒤집겠다고 발표해 논란이 되고 있다.
특히 마오리어 공용 사용이나 마오리족을 위한 보건국 운영 등을 철회하고, 영국 왕실과 마오리족 간에 체결했던 와이탕이(Waitangi) 조약의 법적 해석을 재평가하겠다고 하는 등 반 마오리 정책을 예고하면서 마오리족 등의 반발을 사고 있다.
