Data from Statistics New Zealand reveals that the net immigration figure for those entering the country reached a record-breaking 118,835 individuals by September this year. This significant contribution from net immigrants, particularly surpassing natural population growth, played a pivotal role in driving the population surge.
Statistics New Zealand explained, "Despite the natural increase in New Zealand's population being a mere 19,300, the influx of immigrants has resulted in a rapid population increase." Immigration has traditionally been a key factor in population dynamics, surpassing natural growth.
However, this population boom has raised new concerns. While it is anticipated that labor shortages will alleviate, there are apprehensions about a resurgence of inflationary pressure due to increased demand. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand has signaled the end of tightening measures, but concerns about additional demand and inflation persist.
According to Bloomberg, opinions vary on whether the current immigration influx has already peaked, with expectations of a slowdown next year making definitive conclusions challenging. Nevertheless, New Zealand is cautiously looking ahead to the future, considering the sustainability of this growth trend.
