Air New Zealand warns of disruption for the next two years amid engine inspections
Air New Zealand is making schedule changes on some routes due to engine inspections. The Auckland-Seoul (Incheon) direct route and the Auckland-Hobart (Australia) route will be temporarily suspended from April 2024 for six months. Currently, Air New Zealand operates the Auckland-Incheon direct route three times a week, and this is scheduled to continue until March 30, next year.
Reservations for the Auckland-Incheon route departing from April will still be possible through Air New Zealand, but it won't be a direct flight, as it will be operated by partner airlines partially. These changes were made to accommodate maintenance related to Rolls-Royce Trent-1000 engine availability issues installed on the Seoul route's Boeing 787 aircraft. Air New Zealand stated that the reason for suspending the Seoul and Hobart routes is the lower number of passengers, which has a lesser impact on their operations. The suspension is temporary and will only last for six months starting from April next year.
Customers affected by these changes do not need to contact Air New Zealand, as the airline will get in touch with them in the coming weeks. In addition to this, Air New Zealand's 17 aircraft may experience schedule changes over the next two years for inspections to check for minor cracks in the engine fan. In July, engine manufacturer Pratt & Whitney announced that up to 700 aircraft worldwide need to be inspected. Although there are no safety issues, removing and sending engines abroad for inspection of potential cracks can affect flight schedules. Air New Zealand stated that most passengers will not be affected, but some international flights may be delayed by up to a day compared to their original reservation. They also mentioned that slight adjustments and refunds are possible for about 150,000 passengers whose flight times may change by an hour to a day.
AirAsia X Replaces Auckland-Sydney Route with Auckland-Gold Coast Route
Low-cost airline AirAsia X is discontinuing the Auckland-Sydney route and is instead launching the Auckland-Gold Coast route. The Auckland-Gold Coast route will operate three times a week starting from February 3, 2024, while the Auckland-Sydney route will end on January 31. The Gold Coast-Auckland route was AirAsia X's first route 16 years ago and has continued to be the most preferred route for travelers.
Passengers who have made reservations for the Sydney-Auckland route that is being discontinued next year will receive refunds or credits, and if they are traveling to Kuala Lumpur, they can route through the Gold Coast. AirAsia X will continue to monitor the situation, and if demand for the Auckland-Sydney route recovers, they will consider resuming the route. However, at present, they focus on leisure travel, and the demand for the Gold Coast-Auckland route is increasing. The Gold Coast-Auckland route is the busiest route for AirAsia X, with over 220,000 passengers using it since January. Flights from Auckland to the Gold Coast will be available for booking from November 7 at 5 PM local time in New Zealand, with fares starting at $179.
United Airlines Introduces New Direct Auckland-Los Angeles Route
United Airlines is launching a new Auckland-Los Angeles route, operating three times a week. The first United Airlines UA642 flight on the Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner model departed Auckland on October 30 at 3:40 PM. The Auckland-Los Angeles direct flight will initially operate three times a week and expand to four times a week from December. United Airlines has announced that due to significant growth in demand in the South Pacific region, they plan to increase flights to double the 2019 levels before the end of this year, surpassing the reduction in flights caused by COVID-19.
