New Zealand Faces Controversy Over Changes in Foreign Land Acquisition Policy
The foreign land acquisition policy of the New Zealand government is under scrutiny from the Labour Party. The Labour Party alleges that the government is allowing easier purchase of New Zealand land by foreign buyers by changing the application processing methods.
Traditionally, the Land Information New Zealand (LINZ) has been responsible for final approval of land acquisition applications by foreign buyers through the Overseas Investment Office. However, recently the government has delegated these powers to LINZ.
Chris Penk, the spokesperson for LINZ, anticipates that this measure will streamline the land acquisition application process, reduce investors' uncertainty, and incentivize foreign investment in land, thereby aiding economic recovery.
However, Damien O'Connor, the Labour Party spokesperson for land information, expressed concerns over these changes. He apprehends that the government may be willing to take any measures to balance the books and cut tax relief costs. Moreover, the fact that land sale assessments by foreign investors will now be conducted by LINZ staff raises concerns about the alignment of short-term government interests with long-term national interests.
