The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) is facing diminished expectations for interest rate hikes amid a first-quarter decline in anticipated inflation. According to data released by the RBNZ on the 13th, New Zealand's expected inflation continues to weaken, resulting in a diminished outlook for additional interest rate increases. The one-year expected inflation is calculated at 3.22%, recording a figure lower than the 3.60% from the previous survey.
Simultaneously, the two-year expected inflation has dropped from 2.76% to 2.50%, marking its lowest level since 2021. According to Satisi Rantchhord, an economist at Westpac, this decline in expected inflation is expected to alleviate concerns about the sustainability of the current inflationary trend, thereby somewhat easing the burden on the central bank.
Amidst the ongoing high levels of inflation, the analysis suggests that the central bank's burden will be partially relieved with the easing of expected inflation. Rantchhord, the economist, commented, "The Reserve Bank of New Zealand may not apply the brakes just yet, but there is a sense of comfort in the monetary policy being tight enough to bring inflation back to the target level."
Westpac anticipates that the Reserve Bank of New Zealand will maintain interest rates at the current level throughout the year.
