In a strategic move set to redefine the era of passenger transportation, Air New Zealand, a leading airline in the region, has unveiled plans to incorporate small electric aircraft into its fleet starting in 2026. On the 5th of this month, Air New Zealand placed an order for small electric planes from 'Beta Technologies,' an aviation startup recently infused with investments from Amazon.
Beta Technologies' electric aircraft boast capabilities similar to conventional passenger planes, including vertical takeoff and landing. Recent test flights have demonstrated a remarkable range of up to 500 km. Air New Zealand is actively conducting eco-friendly, emission-free flight tests, aiming to achieve carbon-neutral air travel by 2050.
Around 2026, Air New Zealand intends to deploy Beta Technologies' electric aircraft on short-distance trial routes covering approximately 150 km. The new aircraft, slightly over 12 meters in length, can achieve speeds of around 270 km/h. Moreover, recharging the batteries is anticipated to take no more than one hour.
Building upon the outcomes of the trial route operations, Air New Zealand has revealed plans to integrate these small electric aircraft into regular domestic routes starting from 2030. This marks a significant stride forward for New Zealand, opening up new possibilities for sustainable aviation transportation in the future.

뉴질랜드의 주요 항공사인 에어 뉴질랜드가 오는 2026년부터 새로운 시대의 여객 운송을 위해 소형 전기 항공기를 도입한다는 계획이다. 지난 5일, 에어 뉴질랜드는 최근 아마존이 투자한 항공 스타트업 '베타 테크놀로지스'로부터 소형 전기 항공기를 주문했다.
베타 테크놀로지스의 전기 항공기는 일반 여객기와 유사한 이착륙이 가능하며, 최근 시험 비행에서는 최대 500km까지 비행이 가능했다. 에어 뉴질랜드는 이를 통해 2050년까지 항공기 운항 탈탄소화를 위한 친환경 무공해 항공기 비행 테스트를 진행 중이다.
에어 뉴질랜드는 오는 2026년에 베타 테크놀로지스의 전기 항공기를 약 150km 단거리 시범 노선에 투입할 계획이다. 새로운 항공기의 길이는 12m가 조금 넘으며, 최대 속도는 약 270km 정도이다. 또한 배터리를 재충전하는 데는 1시간 이상이 소요되지 않을 것으로 예상된다.
